What's On The Bench...
Welcome to The American Craftsman Workshop!
This is a new site and there is much work to do. If you stay tuned, you will witness many changes. I will be adding the gallery, shop, and video pages.
The purpose of the American Craftsman Workshop is to share woodworking knowledge and skills using real world projects from my business. By using my projects I will share all of the juicy information that woodworkers want to know about. That includes information on the design, construction, technical challenges, finish, and installation.
I have a lot of information to share using projects from the past and projects that are currently in the shop. They will range from remodel to fine woodworking so there should be something for everyone.

One of my current projects is not a full remodel, but a replacement project for a handrail, bench, and bookcase.
The house was built in the 1920's and the original design elements expressed much of the Arts&Crafts period. Many of these elements have been replaced over time as the house has been remodeled. Most of these changes occurred in the 1960's and 70's.
The clients wanted to do something new that would brighten the room. They wanted to replace these items, not get rid of them, and they wanted the look to be more period appropriate. I gave them some ideas and even went shopping with them to look at handrails.

Recently, I showed a group of experts a bookcase carved from three trees that had blown down on our farm: oak, ash, sweet chestnut. I bet the experts a fiver that none of them could identify correctly the three types of wood that had been used.
